Landour, a small cantonment town contiguous with Mussoorie, is about 35 km (22 mi) from the city of Dehradun in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India. Named after the Welsh village of Llanddowror, Landour is a quaint little cantonment town near Mussoorie in the foothills of the Himalayas. Its poetic beauty inspired them to call it ‘Hamlet in the Hills.’ With the Shivalik hills on one side and lofty Himalayan peaks on the other, the dramatic landscape and serene atmosphere make Landour the perfect getaway. The twin towns of Mussoorie and Landour, together, are a well-known British Raj-era hill station in northern India. The distinction, indeed, between Landour and Mussoorie was made in the historic days after the Indian Mutiny of 1857 when cantonment towns were formally surveyed and formalized. The Cantonment Act that came into being in 1924 had a far-reaching ecological impact. The title to all trees was mentioned as being with the Army, and this has prevented a lot of deforestation, and as a result, Landour remains green, compared to Mussoorie. Another clause, which terms all non-governmental and non-military buildings post-1924 as “illegal”, has saved the town from rampant construction. Repairs of old houses are allowed. Landour – tourist spot in Uttarakhand is perfectly perched for easy nature hikes or multi-day trails of moderate intensity that will delight nature lovers, birdwatchers and photographers. Try the Village Trek to Kolti and the short Fleming Nature Trail (Eyebrow Path) or longer hikes like the Mussoorie Ridgeline Trek, Seven Summits Trek or Nag Tibba Trek, the most prominent summit in the Lower Himalayas to the north of Landour.
